How to clean moissanite jewelry?

Jul 23,2022 | VOOGME

Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness, it gives good resistance to impact. Thus, moissanite has high durability, second only to diamonds. However, it also needs proper maintenance to keep the gemstone in top condition. Luckily, it is easy to clean and maintain moissanite. Here are some tips that can help you keep your moissanite jewelry shining for years:

  1. Clean moissanite with everyday household products

You are able to simply use soap, warm water, and a soft cloth or toothbrush to clean your moissanite jewelry. First, place the jewelry in the soap solution and gently brush the stone, taking care to clean the hard-to-reach areas. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly to remove any residue and dry the moissanite jewelry on a lint-free cloth.

  1. Using a jewelry cleaner

If you want to use something more professional than soap and water, you can choose a jewelry cleaner specifically for gemstones such as diamonds, moissanite, and ruby. There are a variety of jewelry cleaners on the market, so you can choose a non-toxic, non-abrasive cleaner, and then follow the instructions to keep your moissanite clean.

  1. Using an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner

Moissanite is strong enough to be used in an ultrasonic cleaner, and the cleaner’s vibrations are effective in removing dirt from the stone. However, we recommend not to use this method outside of a jewelry shop, because this may cause the stone to be loose due to the vibration. Jewelers use an ultrasonic cleaner always check for loose stones and tighten them first.

Notice:

  1. Avoid using chemicals: When cleaning, avoid using harsh chemicals such as household detergents, cosmetics, hairspray, and chlorine. Although they do not usually damage moissanite directly, they can increase the build-up of dirt and reduce the fire of moissanite. Also, please do not wear moissanite jewelry in the shower, since the bath products such as shampoo, also belong to chemicals.
  1. Avoid storing with other jewelry: Moissanite is very hard, and can scratch other softer stones and metals. It is best to store moissanite jewelry in a separate pouch or compartmentalized jewelry box.
  1. Avoid violent impact: Moissanite can withstand strong knocks, but that does not mean it cannot be broken. There is a risk of shattering if it is struck hard. Avoid wearing your jewelry for sports, hiking, gardening, etc.

Other things you may care about:

  1. Will moissanite become hazy?

Moissanite will never become hazy. However, as dirt and grime build up over time, your moissanite may show a thin film of tarnish. Since the interior of moissanite never becomes cloudy, any stains are purely superficial and can be removed by cleaning.

  1. How often should I clean moissanite?

There are no rules stating when moissanite should be cleaned. You can clean them every two or three months, or whenever you notice that the moissanite looks stained.
